Disney News….

Gary Wilson, Walt Disney Co.'s longest-serving director and one of its most influential, is leaving the board as part of an effort to bring fresh blood to it, the company disclosed Friday. The board Thursday accepted Wilson's resignation, effective Monday, Disney said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Disney's former chief financial officer, Wilson now serves as chairman of Northwest Airlines Corp. He was on Disney's board 21 years.

Attraction of the week.

Pirates of the Caribbean has entertained millions of Walt Disney World guests on a thrilling adventure through dark, mysterious caverns where ?dead men tell no tales? since it opened at Magic Kingdom on Dec. 15, 1973.

Starring a comical cast of rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves, the eight-and-a-half minute Adventureland attraction sends guests of all ages on a rollicking boat ride to a Caribbean seaport under siege by a swashbuckling band of pirates.

History -

Pirates of the Caribbean first opened at Disneyland in 1967 and continues to delight guests today. According to Disney archivist Dave Smith, many guests still consider it their favorite theme park attraction.

The Disneyland attraction originally was conceived by Walt Disney as a walk-through exhibit until the 1964 World?s Fair presentations created by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) paved the way for a more sophisticated kind of three-dimensional storytelling known as Audio-Animatronics?.

Veteran Disney animator and Imagineer Marc Davis created hundreds of humorous pirate drawings during the attraction?s development in the early 1960s, sketches that Disney sculptor Blaine Gibson helped bring to life as Audio-Animatronics figures.

Episode 3 Show Notes...

Disney News

Heres some Disney news Walt Disney Co. has agreed to buy Hungama, an Indian children's TV channel that broadcasts in Hindi, for about $30.5 million as it ramps up investment in the fast-growing market.

When Radio Disney celebrates its 10th birthday this weekend, it will broadcast the celebration and corresponding concert in California as a live Web cast.

Disney pin-trading nights are coming to an end at Walt Disney World hotels, and some collectors wonder if it's because of declining interest.

Never mind that movie ticket sales are picking up and that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest could become the biggest hit in motion-picture history. As studios slash jobs and restructure to boost profits, Hollywood's creative and executive ranks are having a collective anxiety attack.

Attraction of the Week Enchanted Tiki Room.

The Enchanted Tiki Room contains Walt Disney's first Audio-Animatronic performers, a rowdy, rousing cast of 225 all-talking, all-singing, all-whistling birds, flowers, masks, drummers, and tiki poles. Once Walt had solved the problem of animating three-demensional figures, he thought of putting a Chinese restaurant in Adventureland where a audio-animatronic Confucius-like character would amuse the diners by spouting Oriental words of wisdom. This expanded into a more elaborate idea of staging a dinner show featuring a cast of performing birds. Finally the notion of a restaurant was dropped, as it proved to not be practical for Disneyland. What was left was a 17-minute revue with an Audio- Animatronics cast. The Enchanted Tiki Room, "overflowing with the color and spirit of the islands," opened in 1963. Four avian emcees -- Jose, Micheal, Pierre, and Fritz -- lead a company of animated orchids, bird-of-paradise flowers, parrots, macaws, toucans, cockatoos, carved wooden tiki poles, tiki drummers, and masks. This musical show includes the songs wonderful music of the famous Sherman brothers, Richard and Robert. Musical numbers include "The Hawaiian War Chant," "Let's All Sing (Like the Birdies Sing)," "Aloha to You," and, of course, the show's theme song, "In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" plus others.
