SPLASH MOUNTAIN!!!

Splash Mountain is an attraction at three Walt Disney Parks that is based on the 1946 Disney film Song of the South. Each Splash Mountain features a large cast of audio-animatronic figures singing portions of the motion picture's soundtrack with a finale of a steep drop into a Briar Patch.•[edit]StorySpoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. The ride presents disconnected scenes taken from the animated segments of Song of the South. It tells the story of the adventures of Brer Rabbit, a mischievous rabbit who leaves his home at the Briar Patch to look for his laughing place. Unfortunately for him, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, the antagonists of this story, are determined to catch him. Brer Rabbit outsmarts the two a few times, but in the end, they manage to catch him and take him to Brer Fox's cave at Chickapin Hill. Brer Rabbit outfoxes them one final time, by tricking them into throwing him into his home, the Briar Patch. At that point, riders are sent down the big drop into the Briar Patch. At the end of the ride, a showboat and a lot of critters sing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah to celebrate Brer Rabbit's safe return.[edit]Attraction facts• Grand opening:o Disneyland: July 17, 1989o Magic Kingdom: July 17, 1992 (dedicated October 2)o Tokyo Disneyland: October 1, 1992• Designer: Walt Disney Imagineering• Height: Mountain is 87 feet• Length: Approx. 2640 ft Disneyland; 2,600 ft Walt Disney World; 2,800 ft Tokyo Disneylando Over 20,000 gallons flow through the flume every minute• Size: Occupies a 9.2 acre site• Audio-Animatronics: 105 in Disneyland ;68 in Walt Disney World• Drop The largest drop is a 5-story (52.5 ft.), 47-degree waterfall at Disneyland, at Tokyo and WDW, the drop is less steep, at 45 degrees.o The drop has a braking system that could stop a log in 1.4 seconds during the drop• Speed: Over 40 mph on the final drop• Height requirement: 40"• Show length: aprox. 10:00• Ride system: Flume ride• Log: Each log has a weight of 1 ton.o Magic Kingdom & Tokyo: 8-passenger logs (Side by side seating in four rows)o Disneyland: 6-passenger logs (single file) [Seven passengers is possible, because of large bench seat in last row]• Lift Motors: Custom made from Europe with a total of 3 lifts• Location in the park:o Disneyland Critter Countryo Magic Kingdom Frontierlando Tokyo Disneyland Critter Country(Only available in California version)[edit]Splash Mountain PhotographyAn example of a picture taken by the Splash Mountain camera.During the 52 1/2 foot plummet, a camera takes pictures of park guests in their log. Other Disney attractions that are equipped with souvenir photos are Disneyland's Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Disney-MGM Studios' Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Disney-MGM Studios' and Disney's California Adventure Park's Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Disney's California Adventure Park's California Screamin', Disney's Animal Kingdom's DINOSAUR, Disney's Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest and Epcot's Test Track. This attraction has become very famous for a picture-taking ride, and a source of controversy. Female guests occasionally "flash" the camera exposing their breasts. (This may result in automatic ejection from the park.) While these incidents usually happen in Disneyland (California) the most, it does occasionally happen in the other parks around the world. Although Disney staff members usually discard the images, resulting in the displayed picture being "washed away," it has been suggested that some Disney staff members save them for personal use as some have leaked onto the Internet. The resulting controversy resulted in the ride getting the nickname "Flash Mountain".After the initial controversy over release of the "Flash Mountain" pictures onto the Internet website of the same name, Disney announced it was taking steps to prevent future leaks. For at least 5 years, no new pictures have turned up. To date all pictures on the "Flash Mountain" website are from Disneyland (California). Some speculate its the California culture that is the cause of the problem. Pictures from Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Toyko Disneyland have never been leaked out.[edit]SoundtrackThe ride features many variations on the now-classic soundtrack of the film.• How Do You Do?• Ev'rybody Has a Laughing Place• Burrow's Lament (originally a track from the film titled "Sooner or Later")• Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah[edit]VariationsThe soundtrack for Disneyland's Splash Mountain is unique, while the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland Splash Mountain have the same music score. The soundtrack for Disneyland is rather playful, while Florida and Japan's soundtracks feature a country-western flavor (carried principally by banjos, fiddles and harmonicas). Dialog is Japanese in Tokyo Disneyland.[edit]Releases• The Official Album of Disneyland and Walt Disney World (1991 CD): Ev'rybody Has a Laughing Place & Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah• Disneyland/Walt Disney World: The Official Album (1997 CD): Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah & Ev'rybody Has a Laughing Place• Walt Disney World Resort: The Official Album (1999 CD): Ev'rybody Has a Laughing Place• Walt Disney World Resort: Official Album (2000 CD): 8 minute version of the Magic Kingdom soundtrack• Official Album: Walt Disney World Resort Celebrating 100 Years of Magic (2001 CD): 8 minute version of the Magic Kingdom soundtrack• Disneyland Park: The Official Album (2001 CD): 8 minute version of the Disneyland soundtrack• A Musical History of Disneyland (2005): 12 minute version of the Disneyland soundtrack[edit]Trivia• Ironically enough, the majority of American guests that have ridden Splash Mountain have not had the opportunity to see Song of the South. It has never been released on home video in the US.• The Disneyland version features the largest number of audio-animatronics because many of them came from the now closed attraction America Sings.• Like a number of Disney attractions, much of Splash Mountain takes place outside of park boundaries. Guests are kept oblivious to the transition between the visible "mountain" and the warehouse-like show building that houses most of the experience, and clever landscaping within the park prevents guests from glimpsing the behind-the-scenes structures.• In the Walt Disney World version, there is an obvious "Hidden Mickey" during the show boat scene toward the end of the ride. Mickey can be seen laying on his back in the clouds.• A small part of the Disneyland & Walt Disney World version (Tokyo version unknown) takes the log out of the water and onto steel beams like a rollercoaster (for about 2 seconds). This happens during the drop into the "Laughing Place" (in pitch black darkness). This is also not the only ride in Orlando to have this feature; Sea World Orlando's Journey to Atlantis features a much bigger version of this type of ride track.• Both Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland have their respective Splash Mountains placed next door to their respective Haunted Mansions.• On October 29th, 1989, Ernest Goes to Camp aired during The Magical World of Disney. Prior to the movie, Ernest was seen training for, and finally riding, the newly opened Splash Mountain. The end result had Ernest bewildered and collapsing to the ground, leaving guests to step on him while boarding the attraction.• In 2006, Disney will release a "theme park exclusive" Slip 'N Slide toy based on Splash Mountain.• There are several security cameras in this ride. If someone's stepping out of their seat, the alarm will go off, and the ride will be stopped.• At Walt Disney World, cast members who operate the Splash Mountain attraction are affectionately known as "Splash Trash."• Originally the show scene "Sticky Situation," which portrays Br'er Rabbit stuck in honey, was planned to be the infamous Tar Baby scene from Song of the South. The scene was changed to avoid the same notorious racial controversies that have plagued the film.

Well that does it for the Disney Resorts Podcast thank you for listening PLEASE check out www.freewebs.com/disneyresorts it has the link to the Forums sign up there. We think this is just what the DOC ordered and is nothing to SNEEZE at."Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the foreign box office champ for the past eight weekends, has helped Walt Disney Co. pass the $1 billion mark overseas for a 12th consecutive year.20th Century Fox was the first this year to hit the $1 billion gong, thanks mainly to "Ice Age: The Meltdown" ($460 million). And Sony Pictures, triggered by "The Da Vinci Code" ($535.6 million), hurdled the $1 billion goal late last week. Each of the studios separately crossed the industry mark in record time.Disney News is very slow lately… Remember if I missed anything please email it to me…. Located in Fantasyland, it is one of the few remaining attractions that was operational on Disneyland's opening day in 1955. The ride's story is based on Disney's animated film version of the classic story.HistoryThe original intent of the attraction was for the guests to fly through the ride as if they were Peter Pan. Audiences did not quite grasp this concept and were left wondering, "Why wasn't Peter Pan in the Peter Pan ride?" In 1983, during Fantasyland’s remodeling, an Audio-Animatronic Peter Pan was added to his namesake ride. The original ride featured the ride vehicles flying through the nursery, out over London, onward to Never Land, and finally through Skull Rock, where riders saw Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, Princess Tiger Lily and the Crocodile before unloading. The exterior had a medieval design with the queue being outside. The Florida version of the ride, which opened in 1971, expanded on the original Disneyland attraction. While the overall theme and format of the ride was consistent with the original in California, the Florida ride, as with the other dark rides, would feature its characters in Audio-Animatronic style. The load/unload area featured Omnimover-style moving ramps (like the Haunted Mansion) to better allow for smooth traffic flow. The scenes in the ride were done on a larger scale. The Lost Boys camp and Mermaid Lagoon were added to the Never Land scene. Also, Hook's 48-foot pirate ship, complete with deck, masts, sails and rigging was included. Guests saw Hook and Peter engaged in hand-to-hand combat on the mainsail, while the boys were lashed to the mast and Wendy was about to walk from a plank. Guests would then see Peter and the Darlings posed victoriously on the ship, poised to sail into the sky, back to London. In 1982, Disneyland's Fantasyland was in a phase of drastic overhaul. Some of its rides were being relocated to make room for expanded versions of the dark rides (as well a brand-new one). The posh redo of Fantasyland now resembled a rustic European village in the Alps, rather than a medieval faire. Mr. Toad and Snow White's dark rides moved their respective loading areas (and partial murals) indoors, but the Peter Pan ride still featured a colorful mural, depicting the characters from the film.Departing from the station, but before entering the actual ride building, guests would fly over the rooftops of London. The new version of the ride included Audio-Animatronic versions of the characters, just like in Florida. As part of the new remodel, scenes from the Florida ride were added to Disneyland, including the pirate ship deck (unlike in Florida, Peter and Hook do not duel on the mainsail in California; but on the very bow of the ship). Few scenes are identical between the two versions, but they are amazingly similar. The new Disneyland ride opened as part of the rest of the New Fantasyland on May 25, 1983.Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. After winding through the queue, guests board a three-passenger pirate ship, which is suspended from above to enhance the sensation of flying through the air (the ship hangs from a track on the ceiling, not on a floor track). The ship leaves the load area and winds through the Darlings' nursery, passing Nana the Nursemaid next to some toy blocks, the Darlings (Wendy, Michael and John) in bed and Peter Pan's shadow on the wall. Peter's voice is then heard saying, "And off to Never Land!" At this point, the ship flies out the nursery window and out over moonlit London. Lights twinkle all around. Below the ships are various miniature versions of London's famous landmarks: Big Ben, the Tower Bridge and the Thames river. Then, going past "the second star to the right and straight on 'til morning," the flying ships reach Neverland, where the guests go past some of its landmarks, including the Indian village, a glowing volcano, Mermaid Lagoon and Skull Rock. It is here that the guests encounter some of Neverland's most famous residents, including Princess Tiger Lily, Mr. Smee, the Crocodile and Peter's arch rival, Captain Hook (in addition to Peter and the Darlings).[edit]In the newsPeter Pan's Flight at Walt Disney World's Magic KingdomOn February 14, 2006, "A 70-year-old man was pinned between ride vehicles when he tried to board the ride from the load area moving sidewalk, at about 6:30 p.m. The ride was closed, then reopened the next morning after an investigation. No malfunction was found with the ride. The area around the ride in Fantasyland was evacuated for about an hour after the accident while emergency personnel assisted the victim. The man was treated for unspecified injuries at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was reported in good condition the next day.

So unfortunately my Live Instant Messenging show didn’t work cause none of you added disneyresorts@hotmail.com to your MSN. It was a musical stage show, with audio-animatronic figures.
It replaced the older Kitchen Kabaret presented by Kraft when Nestle took over sponsorship in 1994 and was replaced by Soarin', an Epcot version of the Disney's California Adventure Park attraction in 2005. Almost all of the animatronics from Food Rocks were sold by Mouse Surplus on the online auction site eBay.

Synopsis
The show was themed as a benefit concert for good nutrition hosted by Fud Wrapper. However, the show is continually interupted by the Excess, a junk food heavy metal band that detests nutrition. In the end, Excess looses their power as Fud Wrapper exclaims "No power, you guys have been unplugged. While sweets are good to eat, you got to eat in moderation". The show concludes as many of the performers return for the final number. The audio-animatronic characters were shaped like food items, with human features. The music was based on popular songs by well-known bands. The lyrics were modified from their original form in order to deal with the topic of nutrition. (For example, "The Peach Boys, singing "Good Nutrition", was based on The Beach Boys, singing "Good Vibrations"). Five of these acts actually used the voices of the parodied musicians including Tone Loc, Neil Sedaka, Little Richard, The Pointer Sisters and Chubby Checker.

Music acts
Act	Set	Fictional group	Parody of
1	We'll Make It Count in the Kitchen	The U-tensils	Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"

2	Good Nutrition	The Peach Boys	Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations"

3	Every Bite You Take	Refridgerator Police	The Police - "Every Breath You Take"

4	High Fiber	Pita Gabriel	Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer"

5	Always Read the Wrapper	Fud Wrapper	Tone Loc - "Funky Cold Medina"

6	Just Keep It Lean	The Sole of Rock 'n' Roll	Cher

7	Tutti Frutti	Richard	Little Richard - "Tutti Frutti"

8	Vegetables Are Good for You	Neil Moussaka	Neil Sedaka

9	Let's Exercise	Chubby Cheddar	Chubby Checker - "The Twist"

10	Give Us Junk	The Excess	none - original compostition
11	Just a Little Bit	The Get-the-Point Sisters	Pointer Sisters

12	Choose Before You Chew	U-tensils and Cast	Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Attraction facts
•	Closing: January 3, 2004
•	Show length: 12:39 minutes
•	Show type: Stage show with theater seating

Please check out www.freewebs.com/disneyresorts. As France's climate is too cold for a realistic presentation of tropical vegetation, Disneyland Paris is the only Magic Kingdom-style Disney theme park that does not have the Jungle Cruise in its attraction roster.
The Jungle Cruise was one of the twenty-two attractions operating at Disneyland on its opening day (July 17, 1955). In celebration of Disneyland's 50th anniversary, the Disneyland version of the attraction features one gold-painted riverboat.

Ride description
The attraction is a riverboat journey through the jungles of Asia, Africa and South America. The boat's Skipper provides humorous narration featuring puns relating to the various scenes viewed during the ride. The seemingly ad-libbed comments individual skippers now often include during their recitations make each ride on the Jungle Cruise a substantially different experience. The original spiel, however, is legendary among Disney fans. Competitions in which they compete to say the seven-minute spiel the fastest have been held.

Version comparisons
Disneyland's version includes a piranha attack scene as well as some explosive effects in a scene where gorillas are ransacking a camp and throwing dynamite into the river.
The Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland versions are similar to each other. They each have indoor temple scenes and the character of Chief Nami corresponds to Disneyland's Trader Sam. The Magic Kingdom ride operates in a counter clock-wise fashion while Tokyo Disneyland's operates clock-wise.
The shape of Hong Kong Disneyland's route is significantly different compared to the others and it also includes scenes depicting angry Tiki gods.
[edit]
Adaptations
The Walt Disney Company You might wanna listen closely because this is gonna help you attempt to avoid lines and safe you time to relax.

How Diz navigates around the Magic Kingdom.

Now I would suggest getting up really early. So you can get to the park when it opens. After that… Walk over to Adventureland and go on the JUNGLE CRUISE… After that go over to Pirates of the Caribbean.. After that… The Enchanted Tiki room will be closed…. So go over to liberty square. And go on the Haunted Mansion… So its about 10. You have been in the park for 3 hours already… After that you go to Fantasyland and go on EVERYTHING except dumbo. We will do that later. After Fantasyland. Go to Tomorrowland. In tomorrowland right away do Buzzlightyear. After Buzz lightyear go over to Space Mountain and get a fastpass… it will normally be about 30 minutes before you can use that. After you get your fastpass go on Carousel of Progress and TTA. That should take up most of your time for your fastpass. After Space Mountain go get a bite to eat at Cosmic Rays Starlight Café. After lunch. Some other things will be open like Tiki room and Country Bears. So head over there and get a fastpass for Splash Mountain. Then go on Country Bears and if you have time the Enchanted Tiki room. After that go on Splash mountain… if your stomach has settled from lunch go on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. So lets say its about 3 now. You still go lots of time on your hands. Go on Dumbo and Aladin. If you want. Or go on some rides again. Go into a show and fall asleep and get a little nap… Well lets say its 5 now and you want supper. You can choose where you want to eat. But I would strongly recommend making a reservation at the Liberty Tree or go and taking the boat over to Fort Wilderness Campground… The have a buffet dinner there that is really good. So now its 6:30. You did every single thing at the Magic Kingdom… Well lets say it was really busy in the park that day so really its 8. Go see Spectromagic the light parade at night. And then watch the fireworks show. Then you will probably be wore out. So go back to your good ole hotel room and sleep for your next magical day at Walt Disney World.

Email Me at disneyresorts@hotmail.com. All versions of the attraction are similar.
The attraction is a stage show, with audio-animatronic figures. Most of the on-stage characters are bears, who perform Country music. Characters rise up to the stage on platforms, descend from the ceiling, and appear from behind curtains. The audience includes audio-animatronic animal heads mounted on the walls who interact with the characters on stage.
Due to overwhelming popularity, The Country Bear Jamboree was given two "spin-off" shows which appeared during the summer and winter seasons at Disneyland. They were called The Country Bear Christmas Special in 1984 and The Country Bear Vacation Hoedown in 1986.
//
[edit]
History
The Country Bear Jamboree was originally intended by Walt to be placed in a ski resort he was trying to build in the mid 1960s. Walt knew he wanted some sort of show to provide entertainment to the guests at the resort, and he knew he wanted the show to feature some sort of bear band. He assigned the project to imagineer Marc Davis.
Davis, together with Al Bertino came up with many bear groups, including bear marching bands, bear mariachi bands, and Dixieland bears. Walt enjoyed them all, but unfortunately he died before he could make any real decisions regarding the show.
After Walt's death, plans for the show still carried on. The bears would be featured in the resort's Bear Band Restaurant Show, and it was decided that they would have a country twang. But while plans for the show progressed, plans for the ski resort did not. Instead, the imagineers working on the project decided to place the show in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in time for its grand opening in 1971. Imagineer X Atencio and musical director George Bruns created songs for the bears to sing.
On October 1, 1971, The Country Bear Jamboree opened its doors in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. It received so much good feedback that imagineers immediately planned to make a replica of the show to be placed in Disneyland. The addition of the show in Disneyland inspired a brand new land appropriately titled Bear Country. In Disneyland, the bears were twice as popular than in the Magic Kingdom because two 306-seat auditoriums were constructed with two exact duplicates of the stage show.
The show was removed from Disneyland on September 9, 2001 to make way for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
[edit]
Characters
[edit]
Bears

Henry- The "ringmaster" of the show, Henry is a welcoming and friendly brown bear. He wears a black top hat and is voiced by Pete Renaday. It is implied that he and Teddi have some sort of backstage romance.
Liver Lips McGrowl- Liver Lips is perhaps the funniest-looking bear. He gets his name from his very large lips. He is a brown bear and plays the guitar. He is voiced by Van Stoneman.
Wendell- Wendell is a brown bear who plays the mandolin. He wears a blue bandanna around his neck and a light brown hat. He also has a massive overbite and buck teeth. He is voiced by Bill Cole.
Teddi Barra- Teddi Barra is a unique bear because she never appears onstage. Instead she descends from a hole in the ceiling on her swing, which is decorated with pink roses. She is a brown bear and wears a blue hat with a pink feather as well as a long pink boa around her neck. She is voiced by Patsy Stoneman.
Ernest- Ernest is a brown bear who plays the fiddle. He wears a derby and a red polka-dot bowtie around his neck. He was voiced by Van Stoneman from October 1971 until July 1975, when his vocals were rerecorded by Randy Sparks. Stoneman's recording can still be heard on the 1971 record and 2003 CD.
Terrence (aka Shaker)- A tall bear with tan fur (in the Disneyland version his fur was grey), Terrence wears a miner's cap and plays the guitar. He is voiced by Van Stoneman.
Trixie- Trixie is a very large brown bear who wears a blue bow on her head, a blue tutu around her waist, and holds a blue hankerchief in her left hand. She also has a slight crush on Henry. She is voiced by Cheryl Poole.
Big Al- Big Al is the fattest bear. He is grey with a light grey belly and wears a miner's cap and a red hunter's vest. He plays the guitar and is voiced by Tex Ritter.
The Sun Bonnet Trio
Bunny- Bunny stands in the center of the stage. She is voiced by Jackie Ward. Because she and her sisters are triplets, they all have brown fur and wear matching blue bonnets and dresses.
Bubbles- Bubbles stands to the audience's right next to Gomer between her sisters and is voiced by Loulie Jean Norman.
Beulah- Beulah stands to the audience's right and is voiced by Peggy Clark.
Gomer- Gomer never sings but instead plays his piano, which has a honeycomb on top of it. He is considered Henry's right-hand bear. He is tall and brown and wears a collar with a blue tie.
The Five Bear Rugs
Zeke- Considered the leader of The Five Bear Rugs, Zeke plays a banjo and taps on the dishpan with "a real ol' country beat". He is a grey bear with glasses who wears a grey top hat. He was voiced by Dallas McKennon from October 1971 until July 1975, when Randy Sparks rerecorded his vocals. McKennon's recording as Zeke can still be heard on the 1971 record and the 2003 CD.
Zeb- Zeb is brown bear with a light brown stomach. He plays the fiddle as well as wears a bandana around his neck and a miner's hat. He is voiced by a member of the Stoneman family.
Ted- Ted is a tall, skinny bear who blows on the cornjug and plays the washboard. His fur is brown, and he wears a vest with a brown hat.
Fred- The biggest of the five bears, Fred ironically plays the smallest instrument: the mouthharp. He is a brown bear and wears blue jeans held up with suspenders as well as a striped red and white tie.
Tennessee- Tennessee Bear plays the thang, which has only one string. He is brown and wears a blue bandanna (red in the Walt Disney World version) around his neck. He is voiced by a member of the Stoneman family.
Baby Oscar- Oscar appears with The Five Bear Rugs, but plays no instrument. In fact, he never says a word. Not only did the show mention their sponsorships, but at the beginning, Henry even mentions part of Pepsi's old slogan at the time ("You've Got a Lot To Live; Pepsi's Got a Lot To Give!") by saying, "Just refrain from hibernatin' and we'll all enjoy the show, 'cause we've got a lot to give." When Pepsi's sponsorship of the attraction was dropped, only the mention by Henry of its sponsorship was dropped, but such was not the case for his introduction that included part of the slogan. It's still part of the attraction even today.
The exact same Audio Animatronic structure used for Big Al was reused to make up the structure of the Oogie Boogie Audio Animatronic in the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction at Disneyland until 2005.
This attraction was originally being designed for the Disney's Mineral King Ski Resort, which was never built due to environmental concerns.
It was one of the last attractions that Walt Disney saw on the drawing board. at the time The Country Bear Jamboree project was assigned to Imagineer Marc Davis. The house originally had a rural American design and was intended to be at the end of a crooked path that led away from Disneyland's Main Street area. Eventually the decision was made to place it in the New Orleans Square section of the park, and thus the attraction was themed as a haunted antebellum mansion. The Haunted Mansion's design went through many changes before its facade was completed in 1963, six years before it would open to the public, delayed by Disney's involvement in the New York World's Fair in 1964 and 1965. At one point Disney's concept was to be entirely walk-through and empty out at a restaurant with a theme of "The Museum of the Weird"; this would be similar to other attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, which is paired with the Blue Bayou restaurant. Plans were designed for this concept, but then abandoned.
In what might be considered an odd twist for a supposedly abandoned structure, the exterior appears new and the surrounding grounds meticulously maintained. Designers wanted to make the exterior of The Haunted Mansion look like the stereotypical haunted house, but Disney himself overrode the idea, claiming, "We'll let the ghosts take care of the inside. We'll take care of the outside." [citation needed]
On August 9, 1969, the Disneyland version of the attraction was completed and has remained essentially unchanged, with the exception of the yearly conversion to the "Haunted Mansion Holiday" (discussed below). The attraction opened at the Magic Kingdom in 1971 when the park opened, and has also never been remodeled since the ride's debut.
[edit]
Attraction walkthrough
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Foyer/Stretching Gallery: Guests stand in line outside the mansion, and are led into a spooky parlor by Cast Members dressed as maids and butlers. From there, the guests are brought into an octagonal room, where the door they entered through becomes a wall, and the chilling voice of Paul Frees taunts them:
Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination, hmm? And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows, and no doors... which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out! Of course, there's always my way...
As the voice speaks, the walls quietly seem to stretch upwards, elongating the Marc Davis-designed paintings on them to reveal the comedic fates of previous guests. For instance, one man is seen in the dress of minor nobility...and red and white striped boxer shorts...while standing on a keg of dynamite with a lit fuse. Another portrait shows a demure young woman holding a parasol...and calmly balancing on an unraveling tightrope...above the hungry jaws of a waiting crocodile (see the backstory section below). The other two are as follows: in one, an old lady was sitting atop a tall gravestone, and in the other, a man with sideburns was sitting on a fat, mustachoid man, who was sitting atop a lean, pale-looking gentleman who was chest-deep in quicksand. The lights go out, lightning and thunder effects fill the gallery and, in a rare instance of Disneyland "dark humor," a glimpse of the earthly remains of the "Ghost Host" is shown dangling by a noose from the ceiling rafters above. At the attraction in Disneyland, the room is, in fact, an elevator with no roof that is being lowered slowly to give the illusion that the room itself is stretching; this brings the guests down to where the ride begins, below ground level. The ceiling above is a piece of fabric called a scrim, which conceals the hanging body until it is lit from above. This elevator effect was necessary to lower the guests below the level of the park-circling railroad at Disneyland. The actual ride building of this attraction is located outside of the berm surrounding the park, and the Disney Imagineers developed this mechanism to lower the guests to the gallery leading to the actual ride building. This stretching room effect is duplicated at the three Mansions at other Disney theme parks, but only one of these requires guests being moved beyond the railroad tracks. The Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland attractions have stretching rooms with ascending ceilings, rather than descending floors. Only Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris uses the same descending floor as Disneyland, also to transport guests beneath the railroad toward the structure containing the major portion of the ride.
Changing Portrait Gallery: When the walls finally do open, guests are ushered into an art gallery with paintings that depict seemingly innocent scenes. Windows on the left give guests a peek at the thunderstorm raging outside. With every flash of lightning, the paintings flicker with ghastly images (including, but not limited to, a demure young woman sprouting snakes from her scalp, a la Medusa, and a magnificent sailing ship at sea becoming a tattered and ghostly version thereof in a storm). The grim busts of a man and woman placed at the end of the hall seem to turn their heads, glaring at the guests as they walk past. The effect, patented by Disney, was achieved by creating inverted busts: they actually recede into the wall. A combination of dim lighting, optical illusion, and wishful thinking make the busts appear to stare at the passing guests. The effect is unnerving and extremely convincing. (A similar effect is used in the Hollywood Backlot section of Disney's California Adventure.)
Hallways of the Mansion: The main stretch of the attraction consists of a continuous track of "Doom Buggies" in which the guests sit as they are brought through the mansion. The "Doom Buggies" are actually Disney's Omnimover system which "pan" the riders to focus their attention on specific scenes, much as a cinematographer would pan a motion picture camera. The special effects throughout the ride were groundbreaking when the mansion first opened. After ascending a dark staircase, guests embark on an eerie journey through the mansion and witness some amazing sights, all created with special effects. In the ride at Walt Disney World, guests see the library scene that involves a group of staring busts and a piano playing on its own accord. In the Disneyland ride, guests glimpse at the infamous Endless Hallway, a corridor which appears endless with a floating candelabra in its centre; a conservatory that contains a coffin with a ghost trapped within, his skeletal hand trying to pry the lid open as he keeps crying to be let out; a long haunting corridor full of knocking doors from the inside (not to mention one that looks like it is breathing); and a ghostly grandfather clock with a demonic physique and 13 hours on it, a dark shadow of a claw passing over it as it chimes midnight (this clock is, in fact, moving backwards).
The Séance and the Ballroom: Guests enter a dark séance room full of floating musical instruments. Madame Leota, a gypsy trapped within a crystal ball, summons the mansion's spirits as she floats gracefully around the table. A wispy green spirit flies around in the corner of the room. Next, visitors are whisked up a dark spiral staircase. As guests pass into the magnificent grand ballroom, the happy haunts begin to materialize. Translucent couples waltz to the musical rantings of macabre organist, while a ghostly birthday party appears to be taking place at the dining table. Some spirits sit on the chandeliers, engorging themselves with wine. All the ghosts in this scene are created using the Pepper's Ghost effect. An important part of Disney history is located in the ballroom scene of the original Anaheim attraction, that is the Hidden Mickey, you might see it. The pipe organ on the far left of the scene is the original prop from the studio's 1954 release, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Prior to the construction of the Haunted Mansion, the organ had been on display in a shop in the "Main Street, U.S.A." area of the park.
The Attic: After leaving the ballroom, guests work their way through the mansion's eerie attic. A ghostly bride's dead heart sends a throbbing red glow through her billowing gown while a phantom pianist pounds out a minor-key rendition of Wagner's wedding march (Here Comes the Bride). All around the attic, playful spooks pop up behind random junk and scream "I do!", as if wanting to marry the ill-fated bride. As of May 2006, the attic features a collection of wedding gifts, personal items, mementos, and wedding portraits. In each portrait, a common bride is featured with a different groom, whose head disappears to the accompaniment of a hatchet sound. Just before the Doom Buggies leave the attic, the same ghostly bride from the pictures is seen floating in the air, intoning wedding-related phrases. As she raises her arms, a hatchet appears in her hands.
The Graveyard: The Doom Buggies exit the attic onto a balcony in the windy night. Stars twinkle overhead in the cold black sky. Ahead, guests can see ghosts rise up from the ground, and a mysterious fog covering the Graveyard below. The Doombuggies turn around and plunge backwards down the side of the mansion, surrounded by ghostly trees with knotted expressions. On an overhead branch, a crow caws mockingly at the guests. The Doombuggies reach the ground, and turn towards the Graveyard's gate, where a Grave Keeper stands, his knees shaking in fright an expression of horror on his face. Beside him is his dog, whining and whimpering in fear. Around the corner, a ghostly band plays a jazzy rendition of "Grim Grinning Ghosts". A king and queen balance on a teeter-totter, while a young princess swings back and forth from a tree branch, all of them singing with the band members. The Doombuggies travel down a hill and turn to see "The Phantom Five," five singing busts continuing the song of "Grim Grinning Ghosts". Next, guests encounter a tea party of sorts, where ghosts are having a "swinging wake" and singing along too. Next, guests see a mummy and an old man. The old man tries to listen to what the mummy is saying through an ear phone, but the mummy is just too hard to understand underneath its bandages. The Doombuggies turn to face two opera singers, blasting their voices up into the night. Beside them are three other ghosts, a headless knight, a prisoner, and an executioner, who also join in the song.
The Exit Crypt: At last, guests pass into a crypt where they encounter the attraction's unofficial mascots, the three Hitchhiking Ghosts. Passing by three large mirrors, they realize that one ghost has hitched a ride in each Doom Buggy. Guests disembark and are bid farewell by a tiny woman, nicknamed "Little Leota" by fans and Disney Imagineers (as this is the second appearance of Leota Toombs, who also provided the face of Madame Leota), before returning to the outside world.
Facts and trivia
Though the attraction is delightfully creepy throughout, the mood progresses from downright eerie to morbidly light-hearted. Imagineer Claude Coats was mainly responsible for the dimly-lit, mysterious interiors of the first half of the ride. In these areas, the happy haunts are never directly seen, leaving the real scares to the guests' imagination. After the séance room, the mansion's inhabitants begin materializing, and the influence of animator Marc Davis becomes apparent. The characters become comical and zany, although the circumstances are quite morbid. The final scenes in the graveyard are kept light by the morbidly kooky song "Grim Grinning Ghosts."

The other incarnations of the ride are very similar, but are not without their differences. The Haunted Mansion is the only ride to appear in a different location of the park in each of the Disney theme parks. The Magic Kingdom's version of the ride is located in Liberty Square and has a Gothic Revival facade. The Disneyland version is located in New Orleans Square. Tokyo Disneyland (which does not have a Liberty Square or a New Orleans area) placed the Mansion in Fantasyland. The version at Disneyland Paris is in Frontierland, and is named The Phantom Manor; it is designed in a Second Empire architectural style. The Phantom Manor features a full orchestral score, an Old West theme, and a more cohesive storyline than the other three Mansions.
In the ballroom scene of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion, one of the floor-to-ceiling panes of glass that is used to create the Pepper's Ghost effect has damage at the guests' level that is a circular puncture, which is rumored to be a bullet hole. The damaged area has been disguised by a spider and its web. Because of the size of these panes of glass, it is impossible for it to be replaced without removing the roof of the show building.
In 1999, a retrospective of the art of the Haunted Mansion was featured at the Disney Gallery above the entrance to The Pirates of the Caribbean. When the 2003 film The Haunted Mansion was released, a retrospective of its art was featured in the gallery as well.
Beginning in 2001, the Disneyland attraction is changed for about three months just prior to Halloween until just after the new year, into "Haunted Mansion Holiday," a theme based on the 1993 Tim Burton stop-motion animation feature, The Nightmare Before Christmas. In 2004, Tokyo Disneyland received its version, "Haunted Mansion Holiday Nightmare." The Magic Kingdom attraction was rumored to receive its own version of the overlay for the first time in 2005, but the differences between Disneyland and Walt Disney World's visitors (more locals at the former versus occasional vacationers at the latter) have made the possibility of the Magic Kingdom receiving the temporary overlay less likely.
On October 21, 2004, a bidder on a Disney-sponsored auction on eBay won the right to be the first non-Disneyland employee to have his name added to an attraction. Cary Sharp, a doctor and health-care attorney from Baton Rouge, Louisiana placed a winning bid of US$37,400 to become Disneyland's "1000th ghost" with the addition of his nickname, a joke epitaph and the signatures of Disney "Imagineers" on a tombstone to be displayed in the attraction. Its placement was guaranteed for ten years and will remain as a permanent exhibit. According to the Los Angeles Times, the opening bid of $750 was placed by horror novelist Clive Barker. Sharp, who had only visited Disneyland once before, placed the bid in good faith as a way to entertain his friends and never expected to win. The tombstone is located in the finale and can be seen just as the "Doom Buggy" enters the graveyard gates. The name on the tombstone is "Jay."
The money has been donated to the Boys and Girls Club. Half went to the local Anaheim chapter of the main charity while the other half went to the Baton Rouge chapter.
In October 2005, Slave Labor Graphics began publishing a bimonthly Haunted Mansion comic book anthology giving the Disneyland Mansion a backstory, with the main recurring story of Master Gracey recalling the old sea captain storyline.
[edit]
Storyline
Note: The information below has never been confirmed or denied by The Walt Disney Company or by Walt Disney Imagineering.
The story behind the ghosts of the Haunted Mansion, while having many theories, has never been completely substantiated. However, one commonly accepted story goes as follows:
The Mansion was built in 1671, on the site of an Indian burial ground, by a Dutch patrician named Ubbe van der Iwerks, a play on the name of animator Ub Iwerks. It seemed to possess a strange nature throughout its history, as even he reported eerie goings-on. Van der Iwerks' family eventually lost control of the Mansion, and over the next two centuries it served as a bordello and pirate retreat. Then in the late 19th century, it was bought by the Graceys, a wealthy Rhode Island family. Master William Gracey, Jr., the scion (born 1890), fell under the spell (perhaps literally) of Madame Leota, an evil amateur spiritualist from Louisiana who hoped to gain great powers by summoning spirits. She became the young Master's advisor (as well as an illicit lover), taking up residence in the Mansion and attracting people from far and wide with her séances. While many of them were undoubtedly fakes, it is undeniable that she managed to draw in several spirits, and make the already cursed house a magnet for intense spiritual activity.
Gracey eventually married Lillian O'Malley, a Georgia trapeze artist; however, he likely had several affairs with Leota after his marriage, much to Lillian's detriment. Leota grew violently jealous and in 1937 convinced Lillian to perform her trapeze act once more; she then magically undid the rope as Lillian was crossing an alligator-infested river, whereupon she fell in and was devoured. (This scene, of course, is depicted in the "stretching" portrait in the entrance room.)
Distraught, Gracey was shortly thereafter introduced to Emily Cavanagh, his second cousin, who had recently lost her parents. The 16-year-old girl was quite taken with him, and fell head over heels in love. But on their honeymoon in 1941, she and her new husband played hide and seek. She hid in a large trunk in the attic. But Leota snuck in, and pulled the lock. Panicked, Emily suffocated. Her ghost is the eerie bride in the attic. As if to add injury to insult, during her funeral, Leota made the horses drawing the hearse panic, rushing off into the Florida swampland and driving Emily's wedding ring, knocked from her coffin, deep into the front walk, where it could never be moved. Emily's body itself was never found.
In early 1943, when Leota tried to use the Mansion to conjure up more powerful spirits, Gracey refused. In the ensuing discussion, Leota told him that she had killed his ex-wives. Finally realizing her danger, he tried to escape, but found all escape routes cut off, as Leota was controlling all the servants. She then began a spell which would imprison him in her crystal ball. Trapped, Gracey hung himself in the Mansion's attic rather than be imprisoned by Leota. As a result, the spell reversed, trapping Leota herself in her own ball, where she remains to this day.
Leota also had a daughter, commonly known as "Little Leota". Her father's identity was never disclosed, but at social functions, whenever she gestured toward Master Gracey, he would blush and remain silent. She was quite a practical joker, with an extremely macabre sense of humor, always enjoying scaring people. (One of the other ghosts, the housekeeper, was actually scared to death by her.) She would often stand outside the property gates, telling guests leaving her mother's séances to "hurry back" and "Bring your death certificate." She was also quite a flirt, and seduced many men who stayed at the Mansion. Three men whom she was never able to reach were the Graceys' butler, footman, and handyman, who were understandably frightened of the consequences of any affair. Finally, one day she had had enough. She lured the men out into the nearby swamp with Hellhound, the Graceys' bloodhound, where they eventually blundered into a patch of quicksand. The three stood on each others' shoulders to try and reach a tree branch, but to no avail. (This scene too is depicted in the "stretching room".) Meanwhile, Little Leota sat in a nearby tree, laughing. But then the branch snapped under her weight and she too fell in.
The biggest death that took place in the Haunted Mansion was in the cemetery. The Graceys had a Halloween party in their cemetery for the towns folk. Victoria Boufout, Master Gracey's great aunt (the ghost in the ballroom with the birthday cake) hosted the party and gave all of the guests name tags with names like "Dustin T. Dust" and "M.T. Tomb". The party was in full swing during the course of the evening, with a musical band, a see-saw made out of a gravestone and a plank of wood and even a crashed hearse. But near the end of the party everyone except the Graceys died, from contaminated water used to make the tea everyone was drinking. Most of the ghosts can be seen in the graveyard scene of the ride.

Top ten. My least favorite attractions at disney world.

10. Hall of presidents. Its just really boring.
9. Mad Tea Party. You can go on this ride anywhere.
8. Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel... Once again not unique to the Disney parks.
7. MGM Backlott tour. This ride really stinks.
6. Basically anything at animal kingdom. No offense to anyone who likes this park.. But I don’t like it.
5. Mission Space. Any ride that kills more than one person should not be at Disney world.
4. El Rio Del tiempo. Its just stupid. Its like a Mexican version of its a small world.
3. The updated version of Journey into your imagination. This original was way better.
2. Living with the land. It makes me snore. Especially if your guide is really boring.
1. My least favorite ride at Walt Disney world is Stitches great escape. I can’t name one person who actually enjoys this attraction. I’m guessing all they did was put Stitch into Alien Encounter. And that was my Top TEN.

visit my sites which are disneyresorts.forumco.com and www.freewebs.com/disneyresorts. According to Disney archivist Dave Smith, many guests still consider it their favorite theme park attraction.

The Disneyland attraction originally was conceived by Walt Disney as a walk-through exhibit until the 1964 World?s Fair presentations created by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) paved the way for a more sophisticated kind of three-dimensional storytelling known as Audio-Animatronics?.

Veteran Disney animator and Imagineer Marc Davis created hundreds of humorous pirate drawings during the attraction?s development in the early 1960s, sketches that Disney sculptor Blaine Gibson helped bring to life as Audio-Animatronics figures.

DISNEY ROCKS

THe Disney Resorts Toolbar.

Hey want the World of Disney at your finger tips????? This part of the show is sent in by Shadesofgreen96 from my forum site. This week shades has a few rumors and facts about Disney. Lets start with WDW. -Shades Of Green , on WDW property , was first called the Disney inn before Disney sold it over to the U.S. Goverment/military. In October the PGA ( professional golf @$ociation ) is in WDW every year , at the course behind SoG for a championchip game. -Who Wants to be a millionaire , in MGM studios , will be replaced with a new attraction. I don't know what , but shades will do some research on this. - MGM Studios in WDW will probably be renamed to Disney Studios... This is still hanging and Shades will also do more research on this too. Now lets hop over to the movies. - PotC 2 , dead mans chest , has made all time records for the box office. The box office hasn't seen so much money since "Star wars, revenge of the sith" Came out. -Also , Disney has decided to cut down on movie making for the next few years. That's it for Shades's corner , To send in news for next week's episode , comment on shade's corner , or just to say hi , E-mail her at shadescornerdropbox@yahoo.com

Attraction of the Week Enchanted Tiki Room.

The Enchanted Tiki Room contains Walt Disney's first Audio-Animatronic performers, a rowdy, rousing cast of 225 all-talking, all-singing, all-whistling birds, flowers, masks, drummers, and tiki poles. Once Walt had solved the problem of animating three-demensional figures, he thought of putting a Chinese restaurant in Adventureland where a audio-animatronic Confucius-like character would amuse the diners by spouting Oriental words of wisdom. This expanded into a more elaborate idea of staging a dinner show featuring a cast of performing birds. Finally the notion of a restaurant was dropped, as it proved to not be practical for Disneyland. What was left was a 17-minute revue with an Audio- Animatronics cast. The Enchanted Tiki Room, "overflowing with the color and spirit of the islands," opened in 1963. Four avian emcees -- Jose, Micheal, Pierre, and Fritz -- lead a company of animated orchids, bird-of-paradise flowers, parrots, macaws, toucans, cockatoos, carved wooden tiki poles, tiki drummers, and masks. This musical show includes the songs wonderful music of the famous Sherman brothers, Richard and Robert. Musical numbers include "The Hawaiian War Chant," "Let's All Sing (Like the Birdies Sing)," "Aloha to You," and, of course, the show's theme song, "In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" plus others.
